Healing is a journey we all face eventually. We can try to deny or avoid it, but the call to heal isn’t something we can ever truly escape. Further, it’s not something that can be found in a quick fix, pill, or in one simple method. I know that may trigger some of you, but please stay with me for a moment.
I’ve dedicated the last 15 years of my life to healing, both personally and professionally. Through my experience, I’ve realized that healing is essential to our individual and collective growth. Further, it’s a required part of the spiritual path.
Healing offers us the opportunity to blossom into our potential, because we confront the core issues that hold us back. This is the path of the soul; the hero/heroine’s journey. To deny or ignore the call to heal, is to deny our soul and potential, personally and collectively. It creates contraction, disconnection, and suffocation of our vital force energy, and of life.
Holistic and Holographic
The true nature of healing is holistic and holographic. We are whole, multifaceted, interconnected beings. Healing one aspect of our lives, creates ripple effects into all other aspects, as well as the world around us.
For example, when we heal at the level of the body, it directly impacts the mind, emotions, and soul. Further, it fuels positive change in our families, communities, and the world at large. I believe one of the greatest issues today is that we are a world of wounded, traumatized, and unhealed people. Too often, we respond and react to each other from our wounded patterns, which further perpetuates the trauma and wounding. The only way to break free of this vicious cycle is to embrace a healing path.
When we commit to healing in our personal lives, it creates a positive shift in the collective. The more I have healed in my own life, the more love, acceptance, and compassion I have found for others. And, the more I want to give to others, and be a force of love in the world.
If you want to make a positive impact in the lives of others, focus on healing your own life first!
I also encourage you to embrace a holistic approach, because it is by far the fastest path. Holistic healing addresses all of who you are – body, mind, soul, and emotions. In addition, you learn valuable tools and resources for being of greater service to others.
With that said, let’s explore the various dimensions of healing.
The Body
Healing the body is a process of cleansing (harmful bacteria, viruses, toxins, etc.), repair (damage and injury), and regeneration (rebuilding). The physical body is dense, so healing takes time and consistency.
Further, the body is the container that holds everything…our spiritual wounds, psychological traumas, trapped emotions, even our mental stories. It is a reflection, and manifestation, of the unhealed aspects of our lives.
Our mental and emotional history, past trauma, and karmic patterns all manifest in the body eventually, if left unhealed. Over time, this can lead to pain and tension patterns, health issues, and imbalances. Although a difficult experience to go through, physical crisis invites us to embrace the healing journey.
Unfortunately, treating physical symptoms alone can be like putting a band-aid on a bullet hole. You may end up dealing with the end result, and not necessarily the root cause. And often, the leading causes of illness are psychological and emotional in nature.
I know this from immense personal experience dealing with chronic health issues. For years, I saw every medical specialist under the sun, with very little success. It wasn’t until I found a holistic doctor that I began to understand the root cause of my illness. And it happened in my very first session, when the doctor asked me an important question about my trauma history.
In short, he helped me discovered two core issues that had a detrimental impact on my health – a painful history of trauma and abuse, and the negative relationship I had developed with myself and my own body as a result (self-betrayal and self-abandonment).
As a specialist in chronic illness, cancer, and autoimmune disease, my doctor sited a direct and undeniable relationship between trauma and chronic health issues. This insight led me to the CDC’s landmark Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study. This is the largest study on the relationship between childhood trauma and chronic disease in adults. Understanding this link helped me to see the full scope of healing I had to address if I wanted to transform my health.
The second core issue was that my body and mind were at war. To get healthy, I would need to heal that conflict. First, I had to let go of the anger and frustration I felt toward my body. I needed to work with it, rather than against it. Next, I had to learn how to love and accept my body as it was, and to honor it’s needs. Last, I had to forgive myself, for all the ways I had betrayed, neglected, and abused myself and my body in the past.
Once I made the commitment to love and accept myself, and work with my body, it started to heal. I learned that how I talk to myself, is how my cells talk to each other – something I now remind myself of every day!
Emotions
On the emotional level, healing asks us to process our trapped or repressed emotions. It’s an act of cleansing and purification; an emotional detoxification for both the body and mind. You see, our emotions sit at the intersection between the body and the mind, and emotion is energy in motion. When we stuff down or avoid emotions like anger or grief, the energy gets stuck. Over time, too much stuck energy leads to pain and dis-ease, even illness.
I’ve seen repressed emotions wreak havoc on an individuals health, including my own. Negative emotions typically get stuck out of fear. We fear that if we allow ourselves to feel the emotion, it will be too much, and we’ll get stuck. Perhaps you even buy into the idea that it’s weak to be emotional.
Yet, the truth is, if you allow yourself to feel and process your emotions, the energy gets released. It is the avoiding, denying and repressing…the fear…that keeps you stuck, not the feeling.
Emotional healing allows you to release past pain, sadness, grief, despair, anger, and resentment. It also allows you to clear any emotional baggage you may have absorbed from other people. By letting go of the energy of your emotional past, you create the space and freedom for something new.
Healing at the emotional level is a necessary, and vital, aspect to healing your body and mind.
The Mind
Healing at the level of the mind is about reclaiming your innate wholeness. Sounds simple, but the psyche is complex and multifaceted, and so is the healing process. With that said, I always advise getting the support of a qualified therapist or coach. We simply cannot see the full picture what needs to heal from within our own psyches.
Psychological healing asks us to reclaim the lost and disowned parts of the self, and to integrate them with love. Typically this involves working with our trauma and wounding. Further, it’s about learning healthy strategies for dealing with fear and pain.
This is not easy to do on your own, and a qualified, safe, and therapeutic support system is essential. Yet, it is so worth the work! Personally, it was the psychological work that created the greatest long-term impact in healing my physical body.
Healing is an integration of the past, and a transcendence beyond it. Our past traumas and core wounds may never go away completely. They are a part of our human experience, and necessary fuel for our growth and development…deeply woven into the fabric of the psyche and soul.
However, healing allow us to deactivate those wounds, and neutralize their negative impact. It also helps us transcend them by finding a sense of purpose in the experiences. We do this by embracing the lessons inherent in them.
Healing becomes an alchemical process that allows us to turn our pain into a sacred gift that serves us in a positive way. Through my healing journey, I reclaimed my gifts, and found my purpose in serving others on their own healing path.
The Soul
Soul healing addresses the wounds, negative karmic patterns, and misalignments that block you from your greatest gifts, vitality, and fulfillment.
To live in alignment with the soul is to embody and share your gifts and purpose. Further, it requires that you honor your core values, as well as your dreams.
If you feel disconnected from your gifts and purpose, or lack true fulfillment, I invite you to embrace the healing journey. Often, it is our pain and challenges that will lead us directly to the truth of soul. This is because when we heal a wound, we also have the opportunity to reclaim a gift.
From a very early age, I felt that I was a writer, and that I had a message to share. Yet, trauma created a fear of visibility in me. I also had a deep survival fear…that I’d never be able to support myself financially as a writer. As a result, I hid for years in the corporate world, and I stopped writing. This is a soul-level wound, in addition to a psychological and emotional one. I developed a fear of sharing my voice, and it kept me stuck and disconnected from my soul and my truth. Yet, by healing those wounds, I reclaimed my voice and my gifts.
The soul incarnates as a pathway to heal and evolve, and to express and create in the physical world. Yet, one key challenge is to heal the separation between the soul and the ego. This is the split between Heaven (the soul/our divinity) and Earth (the human self/ego). I believe this what Jesus meant when he spoke about bringing Heaven to Earth…bringing the soul into the human.
Spiritually, the highest form of healing is to integrate the soul into our lives. This is not about the death of the ego, but rather the healing and transcendence beyond it. The soul becomes the guide and leader of your life. And, eventually, the healed ego learns to be of service to the soul, rather than a block to it.
Imagine…what would the world would be like if we all let our souls take the lead, rather than our wounded selves?
Why Holistic Healing?
Holistic healing addresses the WHOLE of who we are…body, mind, emotions, and soul. I spent many years seeing doctors, and searching for answers to complex and confusing health issues. My greatest frustration was that every specialist only saw me through the tiny lens of their own given speciality…never seeing me as a whole person, and never getting to the root cause.
One of the most powerful lessons I learned through this process was to trust my intuition, and to never give up. It was because of my persistence, and trusting my gut, that I finally landed in the office of the holistic doctor who would change my life. Before I embraced a holistic approach, I was on the slow decent to greater illness, and possible early death. I was diagnosed with a rare condition called Chronic Epstein-Barr, as well an immune system disorder. I had liver and kidney damage, multiple co-infections, virtually no immune system to fight those infections, and over 10 other diagnoses.
However, once I finally addressed the deeper root causes of my health issues, and committed to healing, my life changed. Through this holistic approach I discovered a level of vitality I didn’t think would ever be possible for me. Further, I’ve learned how to support others on the healing path – something I have now dedicated my life to.
Although I will always have some health challenges to deal with, I accept my body with love, and immense respect. Further, I’ve learned to manage my health requirements – physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual – with a level of expertise that no longer requires the level of weekly medical care I once needed. And, in the process, I found wholeness, reclaimed my gifts, and learned how to heal the body, mind, and soul. Further, all that I have learned through my personal journey has become the foundation of the transformational work I now offer my clients.
Thank you for taking the time to read my personal story. I hope it has inspired you to embrace your own healing journey. Trust me, it’s so worth it, because what’s on the other side is better than you can imagine.
